Residents, community leaders, and project partners gathered today to celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for Lofts at Lumber Square, a 60-unit workforce housing development located at 900 Emmet Street. The event marks the official completion of a project designed to help address our region’s critical housing needs.

Developed through a partnership between Haan Development and Northern Homes Community Development Corporation, the completion of Lofts at Lumber Square was made possible through extensive collaboration and significant philanthropic investment from the Community Foundation, along with support from IFF, First Community Bank, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), and the Emmet County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. Construction was completed by Wolverine Building Group.

Today’s celebration marks the culmination of years of planning, collaboration, and investment aimed at expanding high-quality housing options for Petoskey’s workforce. With demand for attainable housing continuing to rise, the opening of these 60 new apartments represents a major milestone for our community.

“Today’s opening of Lofts at Lumber Square is a meaningful step forward for Petoskey’s workforce and for our region’s housing stability,” said Jane MacKenzie, Executive Director of Northern Homes Community Development Corporation. “These 60 new homes reflect our commitment to creating high-quality, attainable housing so that the people who power our community can continue to live and thrive here. We are grateful for the many partners and funders who trusted in this project and helped make it possible.”

Andrew Schorfhaar of Haan Development added: “Today’s ribbon cutting reflects what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose. We are honored to help deliver this much-needed housing and grateful to all our partners who worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life.”

“Lofts at Lumber Square is proof of our community’s strength and shared responsibility,” shared David Jones, Executive Director of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation. “More than 400 donors contributed to this project out of a shared belief that access to housing is essential to the long-term stability and vitality of our community.”

Lofts at Lumber Square features modern amenities and a sustainability-focused design, with the project pursuing LEED certification. Community spaces include a fitness room, indoor lounge areas, a landscaped courtyard, and a third-floor rooftop deck. Residents will also enjoy interior bike storage and a highly walkable location with direct access to the Petoskey Greenway, offering an easy path to downtown and the surrounding neighborhood.

Today’s ribbon cutting symbolizes the power of public-private partnerships, philanthropic support, and a shared commitment to creating housing solutions for those who live and work in the region. Leasing is underway, and new residents have already begun moving in. Those interested in learning more or applying can visit lumbersquare.com.
