A meaningful milestone for our community: since establishing its first scholarship fund in 1994, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to local students pursuing higher education.

This year, the Community Foundation awarded $75,000 in scholarships to support 40 students as they pursue their educational goals, for a total of $1,069,686 in scholarships awarded since 1994. Scholarships provide financial assistance for a variety of post-secondary pathways, including skilled trades programs, community colleges, and four-year colleges and universities. Awards were distributed among 31 new recipients and nine renewal recipients, reflecting the Community Foundation’s ongoing commitment to expanding educational opportunities and investing in the future of Emmet County youth.

These scholarships are made possible through the generosity and vision of donors who established funds to invest in the future of the local youth. For many recipients, scholarship support serves as financial assistance, as well as a source of encouragement as they take the next step in their educational journey.

Anna Funk Memorial Scholarship Award Winner, Bryleigh Rummer, plans to study Elementary and Special Education at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She expressed deep appreciation for receiving this support for her future and looks forward to focusing on her education. “I am encouraged to keep working towards making a positive impact on my community and my future students.” This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Anna Funk, an elementary teacher with the philosophy that all children can learn and succeed, no matter their background or level of intelligence.

The C.W. McClellan Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor C.W. “Mac” McClellan’s commitment to community and aims to support students pursuing higher education in History or Political Science. The recipient of this scholarship, Eloise Jones of Petoskey High School, plans to pursue a double major in Political Science and Public Policy with a minor in History at the University of Michigan. “I look forward to participating in discussions at Ann Arbor’s “Democracy Café,” engaging in advocacy and awareness movements through the Ginsberg Center, and applying for a Washington D.C. summer internship in the coming years."

Scholarship recipients are selected through a thoughtful review process led by the Community Foundation’s Scholarship Advisory Committee, which evaluates applications and recommends awards for students seeking to further their education. In addition, the Jennifer A. Kullik Memorial Scholarship Committee and the Kiwanis of Harbor Springs Scholarship Committee each advise on awards from their respective scholarship funds.

The Community Foundation extends its congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients and wishes them continued success as they pursue their educational and career goals. Their achievements, combined with the generosity of local donors, represent a powerful investment in the future of our community.
